2022 SEEDS now in stock! PERFECT TIMING FOR Holiday Gifting and Natural Winter Stratification
This listing is for one physical intact milkweed seed pod or seed packet. Each seed pod contains as many as 200 seeds. Small seed pods are also available which give the same experience as the regular sized pod, but with slightly less seeds to spread. The small pods contain approximately 100 seeds. The seeds can be directly sown into the ground during the fall, winter sown in milk jugs, or spread naturally by allowing the seeds to carry on the wind.
Make your purchase into a complete pollinator meadow by selecting "Yes!" to Monarch Meadow Booster! You will receive a unique mix of wildflower seeds that will attract monarch butterflies and provide valuable nectar for their incredible journey across our continent!
Monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on milkweed – making them specialists. They are one of the few species able to tolerate milkweed’s poisonous sap and even to accumulate the cardenolides that make them poisonous in turn. Growing more milkweed will encourage Monarch Butterfly populations. For more on the Monarch's lifecycle, visit Mission Monarch: ,and%20assumes%20a%20J%20shape.
The best time to plant seeds is in the late fall (from mid-October until the ground freezes), but I've also had great success with winter sowing using the milk jug method! Winter temperatures are needed for natural stratification (cold treatment) so the seeds will germinate in the spring. All seeds are harvested by hand from privately owned land near the Chequamagon National Forest in Northern Wisconsin or from our family farm in Midwest Wisconsin. All proceeds go toward funding the protection and propagation of this uniquely critical plant.
