I love finding and studying vintage maternity pieces. This grey wool skirt suit is from the (late) 1950s. The jacket has a high, 5 button stance with silver tone embossed centurion buttons. Wide rounded collar with dolman sleeves and gussets. The bracelet length sleeves have a tab cuff and 2 more centurion buttons each and pleated fullness into the cuff. The shape of the jacket is boxy (a-line) in order to allow the baby bump to grow and still fit. The low waist/high hip of the jacket has a horizontal seam and unique pockets each with another centurion button.
The skirt has a "U" shape cutout in the front with an adjustable waistband, one side with 5 buttons and the other with 5 button holes so you can adjust the waist as the belly grows. There is a vertical tab with a loop that the waist tabs thread through to keep the "U" in place around the belly, see pics if that doesn't seem to make sense. Straight skirt with an inverted pleat center back. Both pieces are unlined except that the back panel of the skirt has a black lining.
Please forgive the crude baby bump on my tiny dress form. I wanted to show this suit at least close to what it could look like on a pregnant body (although the bust is still very small).
Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum. It is said to be from 1957.
