Gresco is another company I could not find a stitch of history about. Only through other listings did I learn they also created ornate metal picture frames, lipstick holders, pincushions, thimble holders and so on.
One source states this salt cellar is from the 1950s. How they found that out I do not know! Lol I must not be digging deep enough.
I do believe it is a rare find.
I found this one at an estate sale. Thought it was so pretty and unique with its tiny little tongs.
It used to be glued into the base but was already detached when I found it, so I cleaned off all of the dried up, yellowed residue. You could always glue it back in though.
Total measurements are 3 inches wide x 1 5/8 tall.
"Salt cellars have been used throughout history for ceremonial purposes and dining. For example, during the Middle Ages, salt boxes were considered a status symbol and were often made from silver and featured detailed designs. Salt cellars were also used to protect against poisoning, as closed salt cellars allowed better protection of the contents from possible poisoners.
Salt cellars date back as early as classical Rome. Salt was relatively expensive from the Middle Ages until at least the 16th century and was kept at the table in vessels commensurate with this status. A large and elaborate standing salt cellar, frequently made of silver, was the centerpiece of the medieval and Renaissance table.
Salt cellars are also known by other names, including:
Salt pig, Open salt, Salt dip, Standing salt, Master salt, Salt dish
