If you have or are buying Bolt-On climbing holds, you need T-Nuts installed behind* your climbing wall. If you are building or expanding your climbing surfaces, we offer two types to help your build. There are a variety of grid patterns climbers use and some arrange them randomly. The most common pattern utilizes 72 T-Nuts per 4'X8" sheet of plywood. I've included that grid in the pictures and we offer a convenient 72 pack of T-Nuts. Fifty and 100 packs are also available.
Installation requires a 7/16 hole for either type. I recommend 3/4" ACX Plywood for wall surfaces.
Available T-Nuts
– 4 Prong T-nuts – These are the most common T-nut used in making home climbing walls. They are strong, economical and faster to install. They are typically hammered into place. All 4 lobes of the T-Nut should contact the wall evenly to avoid a cross-threading risk when installing a hold.
– Commercial 2-Hole T-Nut (Screws Included) – The standard for commercial climbing walls, woodworking, and the furniture industry. They are built stouter and have a longer barrel, so you'll get more threads on your climbing bolts. The 2 screw holes allow for secure installation. These are T-Nuts I used in my own home gym. Installing two screws per T-Nut takes more time, but they are less prone to misalignment.
*If you are new to building climbing walls, please know there is no shortcut to T-nut installation – they must be installed behind the wall. If they are installed to the front of the wall, they will tear out. If you already have a solid wood surface and you don't yet have T-Nuts, you could consider Screw-On Holds.
