A pair of handmade to order, Midland Lace Bobbins. These bobbins are probably the most commonly used type of bobbin for lace making. They are designed to have a spangle on the end to help with the weighting and for individual decoration. The neck and head holds a spool of thread in place whilst the handle is smooth and ergonomically designed to be comfortable to use.
These bobbins are approx 11 cm long, and about 6 to 7mm thick at the widest part. Weight approx 2g. The photos show cherry wood (with its distinctive red tinge, the dark chocolate brown walnut and beech wood (with unusual "grain of rice" grain pattern that looks stunning in small items. I can also make the bobbins using maple wood which is a much paler wood with a delicate grain. Look out for limited edition specials when I find that extra special piece of wood
All my items are hand made to order in my small workshop in the West Pennine Moors of Lancashire using a vintage lathe made near Halifax, West Yorkshire and tools made from the finest Sheffield steel. I like to use local woods where possible and let the beauty of the wood shine through. I don't try to compete with factory made bobbins, I make the extra special bobbins that helps make your lacemaking so special – craftsman to craftsman.
