Materials: acetate, cyanotype solution, oak tannin, photographic negative, watercolour paper

A unique, one of a kind A2 tannin-toned cyanotype print of the heritage oak and 'Great British Tree', the Queen Elizabeth I Oak. Located in Cowdray Park, Easebourne, UK, the print forms part of 'Arboreal Encounters', a sub-project within my practice-based PhD. The project focusses on heritage oaks throughout England and uses certain photographic techniques to 'invite' the oak into the process of its representation. To do this, oak tannin is extracted from bark and used to dye the cyanotype, the tree therefore becoming a literal part of the print itself.

This particular print of the Queen Elizabeth I oak is an alternative view, a result of some printing issues I had in the lead up to its exhibition in 2022 (slide two & three). It has since gone on to be exhibited in 2023, but is now being officially retired in favour of the original perspective of the tree intended for exhibition. Because of this, it is highly unlikely this image will ever be printed in this form again (due to the time consuming printing process), making it entirely unique.

Print description:
The print displays an A3, 29.7 x 42 cm print on AS, 42 x 59.4 cm watercolour paper. As can be seen from slide two, I have exhibited the print unmounted within an A2 frame, using the edge of the paper around the print as an inbuilt mount. As the print is available unframed, framing choices are up to the buyer. However, they are welcome to use my own preferences as a guide.

Included with the print is
– An official certificate of authenticity,
– Information on the image and wider project,
– An A5 digital print of one of my black and white landscapes on watercolour or handmade paper.
