This is a beautiful, never used, set of eight linen placemats, hand embroidered in Madeira, Portugal and sold by Neiman Marcus department store.
My best guess is that they are from the 1970's, but they could be much older.
They are in a flower shape and are a light ecru / light cream color – see photo 3 where I've placed them with a bright white linen.
The linen color varies in darkness depending on lighting. The stitching is a light taupe.
The tags are still attached. The diameter is 16" which is hard to find in vintage pieces.
The inner flower is 11.5 inches in diameter – designed so that it frames a dinner plate.
The last photo shows one with a 10.5" diameter dinner plate on top (plate not included).
These are a lovely, light weight linen of high quality and they are in like new condition.
They'd make a perfect wedding or anniversary gift.
They are slightly creased from someone storing them away for decades. I ever so slightly ironed them as I did not want to disturb the tags or finish.
