A mid-century modern design icon meets the most widely sold American dinnerware in history. Russel Wright is credited with bringing modern design into American homes over the first half of the 20th century. His line, launched in 1939, has trademark curvy silhouettes and rounded corners—they’re so easy to dress up and down, in fact, that Wright likened them to “the little black dress."

Russel Wright was an American Industrial designer. His best-selling ceramic dinnerware was credited with encouraging the general public to enjoy creative modern design at table. With his many other ranges of furniture, accessories and textiles, he largely transformed the atmosphere of the mid-century American home.

This American Modern dinnerware is classic! This Russel Wright dinnerware, produced by Steubenville Pottery Company of Ohio, was introduced in 1939 and sold 250 million pieces by the end of the 1950s. The original colors were Coral, Chartreuse, Grey, White, Seafoam Blue and Bean Brown. Many treated this dinnerware like Fiesta – mixing and matching the colors. A second set of colors included Cedar Green, Cantaloupe, Glacier Blue, and Black Chutney.

These pieces were unadorned by decoration, which made them modern, and formed from earthenware, which made them affordable. But earthenware is relatively fragile compared to stoneware and porcelain, so many vintage pieces of American Modern are have chips. They were produced by by Steubenville Pottery between 1939 and 1959. The smooth surface and lines were trend setting for the period.
