This antique bottom gated cast iron griddle is in excellent restored condition. Made by an unknown foundry before 1880 when the side gating patent was awarded. Some bottom gating continued until about 1930 so this possibly dates a little later. You can see two "gate" marks on the bottom of the griddle. A "gate" is the port where molten cast iron was poured in to fill the mold and make the pan.
These long griddles were once used to heat up the old solid ("sad") iron clothes pressers on older wood or coal fired stoves. Several irons were placed on the surface to warm up while one was being used.
This long griddle will cover two burners and is deep enough to hold the grease from a rasher of bacon. Fry up some eggs, potatoes or sausages. Make several pancakes at one time for the grandkids. Perfect for camping. The uses are endless. (If one of your burners is smaller than the other, turn the larger burner down to even out the heating.)
The cooking surface measures 7-1/2" x 17-3/4" and is very smooth. The outside dimensions are 9" x 21-1/2" including the handles.
This is the best example we've seen of a gate marked sad iron heater (griddle). It has escaped the ravages of weather and time. There is no rust pitting and no sulfur pitting. This is amazing given over 140 years of use. You will see "cooling voids" on the cooking surface opposite the gate marks on the other side. This is a natural byproduct of the bottom pouring method in the old foundries.
Weighing in at 5 pounds and 11 ounces this lightweight griddle is flat with no wobble or spin. No cracks, no repairs.
