Depending on ones' taste, 'Wamin' is a somewhat bizarre looking cultivar of Bambusa vulgarisms. The lower internodes are swollen and very short, dwarfing the plant. Grown as an ornamental, it requires pruning on the bottom 2 to 3 feet to look it’s best, showing off its “Buddha Bellies”. A natural spontaneous mutation is darker green stripes on the normally light green culms/canes – these stripes are not universal, but a pleasant surprise when they appear.
Bambusa vulgaris, a stylish oriental plant, is the bamboo to thrive indoors. With an excellent life expectancy, it can be relied upon to create a long and lasting impression.
Buddha Belly can grow to 15 feet tall with 3-inch diameter canes. With its compact size and unusually shaped canes, Wamin is an exotic and exciting addition to any landscape. Known for the pronounced “bulge” above and below each cane’s internode or “waist.”
These plants are hardy to 25 degrees and hardy in zones 9 and above; returning from the roots in zone 8. Budda Belly readily accepts full sun to full shade. He needs consistent watering the first summer / fall, but can accept moderate watering in later years.
