It is handmade of a lovely hammered copper with a repoussè prayer design around the wheel with three rows of glass “gems” of yellow, green, turquoise and red. Some of these glass “gems” are missing and I never replaced. Although, I don’t think it would be difficult to replace, it does not affect it’s use. It is on a well used wood handle. The prayer contained within seems to be very old. I had a Tibetan scholar friend translate the prayer and I will include his translation. He said it was a very old form of Tibetan writing. Blessings of the body, speech and mind of “Ma-chi Lab-ky Dolma” a lesser known but powerful goddess.
This lovely old Prayer Wheel measures about 12” top to bottom. The Prayer Wheel itself measures about 9” in circumference around and is about 5” tall from the base of the Wheel to the finial top.
I received it as a child back in the 1970’s when I helped my neighbors clean up and sweep after their garage sale. This was in the sale and fascinated me, so I chose it as payment over the money they had offered me to sweep up after the sale. They were missionaries in Tibet back in the 1950’s and when people were fleeing Tibet at the time of the Chinese Occupation, they were selling things to earn money to move to India.
