Description
Antique Post Mortem Photograph of Man with Colorization
Dimensions of Frame:
3 – 3/8" by 4 – 3/8"
Frame is .5" depth
Purchased in a collection of post mortem photos, this photo looks to be colorized in the early 1900s- a practice that started in the 1830s by hand. You can notice the colorizing mostly in the tie, back ground, and eyes.
Post mortem was a popular photography practice started in Victorian to preserve a picture of the recently deceased. Many times in these pictures you can spot strings, greying skin, unnatural positions, etc.
In this particular photo you can see significant discoloring in the hands as compared to the face, while both have been slightly colorized in their time, they have a dramatic difference and grey-blue tone to the hands. Eye colorization is also a significant signal that this is a post mortem portrait as it restores a more lively look to the subject.
Frame is gold color with olive tone velvet backing. Frame stands with leg.
