This antique Japanese indigo textile has been hand sourced in Kyoto, Japan.
Japanese Boro textiles are usually sewn from nineteenth and early twentieth century rags and patches of indigo dyed cotton. The diversity of boro textiles is due to the variety of hand-loomed cotton textiles which are patched by hand with sashiko thread. The composition of different patches and mended sections is not planned and therefor holds a beauty and authenticity.
Ai (indigo) is a natural dye that is achieved through a fermentation process with leaves from the indigo plant. The process of indigo dying (aizome) varies throughout the world, and has attracted human beings since ancient times. The colour magically develops when oxygen meets the cloth, once pulled out of the dye vat. Deeper hues of indigo are achieved through multiple dippings. in Japan it is said to hold antibacterial and insect repelling qualities.
Please note this antique textile has various worn areas and signs of age – adding to its beauty.
It is one length of fabric – allowing it to be used in multiple creative projects, or made into a wall hanging. The textile pictured has been pinned around the wooden dowel for hanging and photographing, please note it is not ready to hang. If you would like a hand-stitched pocket for a hanging dowel to be inserted please contact us, we offer this service for an additional fee.
