PetesNeatOldStuff
An exceptionally ornate pattern adorns this old cocktail shaker which includes flowers, birds, rose sprays, antique scrolls and a background diagonal cross hatch, which surround the figures on each side; a pair of musicians and a dancing couple in traditional wear.
We are pretty sure this was made by E G Webster (&Son), NY, USA. There are a few listed online with makers marks.
The firm of Elizur G Webster began the silver plating activity at 175 Broadway, NY in 1860.
A chronology of this business can be read online, it is too long to put here. But the Webster Manufacturing Co was registered from 1866-1874. In 1868 the Silver standard mark was required to be stamped onto pieces to describe the silver content. The bottom of the cocktail shaker has no markings, so it could have been an early shaker made before 1868, but I don't know for sure.
The repousse pattern overlay is silver plated over copper. A lovely patina formed when the silver plating wore off from the handled areas, exposing the copper.
The condition is consistent with it's age, some scratches and a few dents. We have filled the shaker with water to the top rim and have discovered that there are 2 spots that leak at the top join of the handle. Look carefully at photo #7. The shaker could have been dropped and the handle re-soldered, there is a crack line around that spot and a small pin leak just below that above the circular rim join. No leaks below the rim join though. A nice display piece, or would hold a few flowers for a table display.
The lid has no cork, which would have been threaded onto the bolt which still works great.
The spout is missing the matching end with cork.
Size: 7 1/4 inches tall including the lid; 3 3/4 inches at the widest part of the body (around rim); 6 inches from top of handle across to outside of spout.
If you need more photos or have any questions we would be pleased to try and answer.
