Antique Bobbin Lace Doily, square lace doily

This exceptionally fine antique bobbin lace doily has been made in antique white cotton with a floral and geometric heart pattern. It would make a stunning table decoration or framed as a beautiful example of antique lace.

This doily measures 17cm x 17cm / 6.75" x 6.75" and is in good condition for its age.

Bobbin lace, while still made by artisans today, was used in fashion from the 16th to the early 20th century. Bobbin laces are made by using a pattern drawn on parchment or card that is attached to a padded support. An even number of threads (from 8 to more than 1,000) are looped over pins arranged at the top of the pattern. Each thread is wound around the neck of an elongated spool, or bobbin. In the creation of bobbin lace, the threads are crossed over or twisted around each other to produce solid areas of either linen-stitch (which resembles woven fabric) or half-stitch (a more open stitch), areas of decorative filling stitches, and a background linking the motifs together.
