Description
This item is a large length of bobbin lace material finished with a variety of colours of hand applied wool.
The length is 136- inches by 7- inches.
The finished runner was used to decorate the altar of a local church on the Island of Jersey, UK.
The particular church was situated in the country parish of St. Peter which would have had a large congregation of French farm workers in the area.
The RC. Church on the Island at that time were part of the French diocese of Normandy.
The French connection is more than evident in the finished hand sewing with the use of the colours and the style of the pattern which remains painfully and explicitly in the French mode.
The wool used in the sewing would likely have been spun in Jersey or perhaps Guernsey. Also one can see the repetitive pattern with little skips here and there which were likely mishaps as the item was surely created as part of a sewing bee.
On saying there were mishaps the love and dedication applied to the length would have been sincere and humble as the parishioners would have been mindful that this item was going to be gracing the altar.
The texture and colours of the wool used reflect subtle changes as the work was in progression.
As far as I can detect the length has not been laundered since it was produced as the colours have not run and some of the dyes are sure to be vegetable based. The piece has not been stored well but this does not detract from the art and the beauty of the piece. I do not know if the length could or even should be laundered. It is long enough to do a test spot.
It is peculiar that a thin ribbon of wool which runs the length of the piece appears to be in a much brighter condition. I would also describe the piece as primitive farmhouse with all the warmth that the description is meant to convey.
I trust that this wonderful piece of history finds a loving home.
