Up for sale are 3 American Persimmon tree seedlings. Species: Diospyros virginiana.
I grew these trees from seeds collected from a tree growing in Turkey Run State Park.
American Persimmon trees have some of the sweetest, tastiest fruits of any American native wild tree. You can eat them fresh off the tree, or the ground, or make them into delicious persimmon pudding, cakes, pancakes, you name it, they're good in anything.
When you receive your trees, moisten the dirt and gently pull the trees apart. Keep dirt around the roots if you can, but the roots can be safely exposed for a short time. The trees should be repotted in tall pots or planted in the ground immediately.
The saplings can be grown in containers until they develop a large rootball before transplanting outdoors or they can be put directly in the ground. Persimmons do well in full sun or partial shade. Once the trees are planted, let the soil dry out between waterings.
Mulch around the trees in winter for a few years until they develop a deep tap root. Young saplings should be protected from rabbits, especially during winter.
If kept in pots over the winter, it's very important not to let them dry out, or they will be slow to break winter dormancy in the spring.
It's hard to find Persimmon fruits for sale due to a short shelf life and they don't ship well, so your best bet is to be patient and grow your own. These trees are grown from Indiana seeds from the northern end of their range and will survive temperatures of 25 degrees below zero when mature. They also don't mind heat waves and drought once they're well established.
The trees are shipped with moist rootballs wrapped in plastic so they're ready to repot or put into the ground.
Shipping is $13 by Priority Mail or Ground Advantage.
