A one-of-a-kind Warrenfeltz Berry Bowl in the medium size. It's rustic. Woodsy. Organic. And beloved by berry eaters, gardeners, and home decorators alike. Useful as a fruit bowl for fresh-picked apples, clementines, grapes and bananas. Artful and imaginative when holding a shallow candle that will shine through the piercings over the table. This one includes the two lug handles and the matching dish.
The clay is nearly black, making the rustic colors pop without being garish. This one is glazed in my Sotted Sage. Normally a flat sky blue, it goes primal on this rich iron-stained clay. It reacts with the iron to form a cascade of banded shades from black, espresso and cobalt, to a neutral cerulean, teal and sky; sometimes you’ll detect a faint creamy halo. Overall, reminiscent of your favorite distressed stonewashed blue jeans. This bowl in particular has an especially thick glaze so you'll see lots of the thick golden halo at the lower edge and one f the piercings literally plugged up. Extra special. Plus I incorporate my diagonal dipping technique allowing a spot of natural clay to show in the bottom.
Spread: 9” including handles
Height: 4” including dish
Additional colors listed separately.
TRULY HANDMADE AND ONE-OF-A-KIND:
My berry bowls are wheel-thrown from an iron-rich, near-black clay; I've also given many a split rim detail. When it's nearly dry I upend the bowl on my wheel to carve out a foot for better stance and drainage. Drier still, I then carve in the swirling frond lines in single strokes. No do-overs allowed. Then I pierce the berry and leaf shapes one by one, designing as I go, and making sure I don't tear the clay between the holes. Then I carve more curly details in the pattern until it looks imperfectly perfect. Then I slow dry for a week or so until it's 'bone dry' (the fragile consistency of chalk) and then I sand all the burrs off the edges of the piercings on both sides — without breaking the clay.
Once all of this is done, I go back to the norm for all pottery—bisque firing, glazing, clearing excess glaze from each hole, then glaze firing. Time-consuming but so worth it.
