Marcello Fantoni pair of Oriental Chinese figurines 1940s Italian pottery

These are a fantastic pair of Marcello Fantoni (1915-2011) Oriental or Chineses figurines , made in Florence, Italy circa late 1930s-40s.

So characteristic of his early work and showing a more figurative style influenced by classical and Oriental design. A pair of scholars or wizards, beautifully detailed with exceptional crackle glazes.

One has an early version of the handpainted mark to the base 'Fantoni Italy, with the 'Duomo' symbol based on Florence's Cathedral's dome.

A great addition to any collection of Fantoni, Italian or fine art ceramics. The pair making them perfect for display on any mantelpiece, shelf etc.

Each measures 20 x 5 x 5cm / 8 x 2 x 2in.

One has been stuck back together in two places, and one has a chip to the side of his cap, there are a few little chips and wear to the glaze on places, all reflected in the asking price, could be professionally restored.

Marcello Fantoni was one of the greatest ceramicists and designers of the 20th century, his pieces were influenced by ancient Etruscan ceramics, and by contemporary modern artists of the mid century era. Incorporating elements of Modernism, Cubism and abstraction, this led to his pieces being included in collections of international Modern Art museums and galleries.
