Native to Southeast Asia, West Indian lemongrass, or Cymbopogon citratus, is a versatile herb with many benefits. Known as the best ingredient in Vietnamese and Thai cuisine, this sun-loving plant also makes a decorative addition to gardens. Lemongrass will grow outdoors year-round in USDA hardiness zones 9 and above, or it can overwinter indoors in colder climates.

Plant Care:
-Sunlight;
It thrives with six hours or more of direct sunlight each day. It will also grow in partial shade.

-Irrigation;
Keep the soil moist but not wet. Consider watering every three to five days.

-Fertilization;
Requires nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Weekly fertilizer applications give good results in summer.

Planting instructions:
If you are planting lemongrass in a garden, choose a location that gets full sun. Make sure the soil is fertile and well-drained. You can also mix it with manure or aged compost to improve the quality of the soil. Plant lemongrass in the spring, after all chance of frost has passed. If you are planting multiple lemongrass plants, space them about 2 feet apart. If you're planting lemongrass in a pot, use well-draining potting soil and a pot that's large and wide enough to ensure it doesn't topple, as lemongrass can grow quite tall.

Watering and nutrients:
Lemongrass prefers to be kept in moist, but not waterlogged, soil. If your lemongrass is in a garden, it should be watered every few days or when the top of the soil is dry. Container-grown lemongrass typically needs to be watered more frequently, most likely every one to two days during the spring and summer. In winter, you can water less when the plant is dormant. In the spring and summer, you can fertilize lemongrass every few weeks with a water-soluble plant food.

Pruning:
Given the right growing conditions, lemongrass will grow pretty quickly. If you often use lemongrass for cooking, this may be enough to prevent your plant from overgrowing. Otherwise, you may need to prune the plant to keep it healthy. The best time to prune lemongrass is in the spring before the growing season begins. You can prune off any brown or dead-looking stems at the root with clean, sharp shears or by pulling gently if they are already separated.

Spread:
If you're interested in propagating lemongrass, you're in luck—it's simple to do. A piece of lemongrass (with the basal plant intact) can easily root in a glass of water.

Harvest:
When the lemongrass stems reach 12 inches high and are about half an inch at the base, the plant is ready for harvest. If you have an outdoor plant, harvest lemongrass towards the end of the growing season, before the first frost.

Indoor plants can be harvested throughout the year. Harvested lemongrass looks like scallions with a small, white bulb on the underside. You can pull up a stem by hand or cut the stem off at ground level. Either way, you want the lower part of the stem, which is the edible part of the plant.
