On June 24, 1947, a private pilot reported seeing nine shiny, unidentified flying objects near Mount Rainier, estimating their speed to be at least 1,200 miles per hour (1,932 km/h). This sighting, the first significant one in the United States after World War II, attracted widespread national attention and marked the start of the modern UFO era. The media quickly coined the terms "flying saucer" and "flying disc" based on the pilot's description, and numerous similar sightings were reported in the weeks that followed.
