Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa senensis) are attractive flowering tropical shrubs with thousands of colors and bloom for variations. One of the more interesting and unusual is El Capitolo, also known as Lion's Tail, Pom-Pom, or Poodle Tail. It is an old hybrid that is thought to be from Hibiscus schizopetalus, crossed with an unknown parent.
The flower is unique. Its main body consists of five scarlet red single-ruffled petals and another smaller, double pom-pom flower hanging from the center on a long, pollen-tipped stamen.
Peach orange and a pale apricot yellow sported from the red later. A 'sport' is a random, spontaneous genetic mutation.
As a bonus to the unique flower, the bush has a strong, sturdy, vigorous, upright growth habit. The leaves are medium-sized point ovals in dark, glossy green with burgundy veins and sharply serrated edges. The plant is resilient and long-lived. It is often found growing wild on abandoned lots.
