Early Fenton Iridescent Blue Stretch Glass Cake Plate / Pedestal, “Celeste” Pattern, Antique 1920s-30s

Materials: Glass

This early Fenton stretch glass cake plate is the loveliest shade of aqua or turquoise blue. The iridescent colors and the leaf-like veining in the surface of the top plate is reminiscent of butterfly wings. The plate is perched on a dainty flared pedestal base. Stretch glass is a multi-step process in glass making. After a piece of glass is pressed or blown-molded, it is sprayed with a metallic salt mix while the glass is still hot. The piece is then reheated, reworked and “stretched” to its final shape. The salt mixture is what causes the iridescent color and stretching the iridescence produces an onion skin-like effect. This stunning piece of glass was produced in the 1920s, making it a true antique. Fenton produced stretch glass until the early 1930s and then stopped the production. When stretch glass was reintroduced in the mid-70s, later Fenton pieces were marked with the Fenton logo in an oval. This piece is unmarked, as was the practice on earlier Fenton glass. Early Fenton pieces, such as this one, are light, delicate and thin, unlike the heavier later pieces from the 70s and on.

USE:
How lovely would this cake plate look with a small cake, muffins or cupcakes on top? A small glass cloche or dome could be placed on top to display your best baked goodies or your favorite Fenton glass figurines. Store this fine, fragile piece of Fenton glass in a lighted display cabinet or china hutch, when not in use, for years of enjoyment. It will no doubt be an heirloom piece you will want to hand down for generations.

SIZE:
This cake plate measures 7.5” in diameter and is 2” tall. The base diameter is 3.75”.

CONDITION:
This cake plate is an antique and comprised of very fine glass. It has a bit of roughness along the top edge of the plate in a couple of spots which is to be expected for a piece this delicate and of this age. The surface wear is not visible to the naked eye and can only be felt. It does not in any way detract from the beauty of the piece. There are otherwise no chips, cracks or crazing. I would deem this cake plate to be in very good, useable condition.
