Description
Antique Wooden Spice Box, Masala Box, Hand Made & Carved, Late-19th Century, Indian, Five Spice Compartments, Pivoting Lid, Primitive Spice Box
This antique wood, hand carved spice or masala box has five compartments and a pivoting cover. The wood has a wonderful smooth, aged patina. It has a flower-shaped, brass medallion at the pivot point. There is also a metal loop on one end. This might have been for hanging the box. This is a great piece of history and makes a great “objet d’ art” and conversation piece. It also could be used as a box for special treasures or jewelry.
What is a masala box?
The origins of the masala box can be traced back to ancient India, where spices were used not only for their flavor but also for their medicinal properties. The use of spices in cooking was a symbol of wealth and social status.
Very good vintage condition. The box is in sturdy condition. Please see photos as they show all sides of the box and any condition issues.
Clean and odor-free.
