I love vintage maternity pieces and this one from the (late) 1950s does not disappoint. Made of brown wool or wool blend. The short sleeve jacket has a large inverted box pleat to allow for growth. The collar is edged with ivory yarn and a wide tab center front accented with a decorative button. Pockets at the side front hips. Thin shoulder pads. 6 covered button closures center back.
The skirt has a "U" shape cutout in the front with rust colored ribbon ties for adjusting the waist as the belly grows. There is a vertical ribbon with a loop that the waist ties thread through to keep the "U" in place around the belly, see pics if that doesn't seem to make sense. The ribbon continues all the way around the skirt as the waistband. Kick pleat center back skirt hem. Both pieces are unlined. Both pieces can adjust to grow with the baby bump.
Please forgive the crude baby bump on my tiny dress form. I wanted to show this suit at least close to what it could look like on a pregnant body (although the bust is still very small).
Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum. It is said to be from 1958.
